Luis Oliveira breaks hegemony

24 outubro 2015

For the last 11 years the Baja Portalegre 500 has been won by either António Maio (5 times), or Mário Patrão (6), but Luís Oliveira has now broken both their reigns at the Automóvel Club de Portugal event and ensured his first win at the most relevant event of the national calendar. This is a triumph which comes after having been crowned National Enduro Champion.
Oliveira’s win at the Baja Portalegre was built during the second day of competition, in which the rain was a constant during the 350 km of SS3. At kilometer 25 Luís Oliveira was already second, more than 4 minutes behind Mário Patrão. However, Patrão crashed before ZA3, losing precious time to his rivals. Eventually, Oliveira took the lead in the last 25 km, arriving at Portalegre with a 26-second advantage over Patrão, second with a 11-minute margin over Sebastian Buhler, the TT1 class winner.
António Maio ended the competition in fourth, which was more than enough to ensure his first overall National Championship title and, at the same time, the TT2 class crown. Meanwhile, despite having been sixth overall at the Baja, behind David Megre, Gustavo Gaudêncio took the TT1 class title, while Fausto Mota won the TT3 class crown after having finishing the event in seventh.
Fourth win for Borrego
Roberto Borrego was out of the championship fight. Even so he gave his very best to ensure his fourth win at the Baja Portalegre 500, putting an end to his lack of victories at the race since 2012.
The Ponte de Sor rider was the fastest over today’s 350 km SS3 and won with a 15m58s advantage over André Catita and more than 20 minutes ahead António Moreira.
Tiago Gomes withdraw some 50 km from the finish line, while riding in third. However, with Moreira's third place, Gomes managed to win the Championship.
