Belgian De Mévius leads a very demanding Baja Portalegre 500

06 novembro 2020

The 34th Baja Portalegre 500 is proving to be very tough and challenging for competitors. With an extremely difficult terrain, Guillaume de Mévius, in Can Am Maverick X3, is the absolute first place. The Belgian driver overcame the tremendous difficulties felt in the second selective sector and left the runner-up, Pedro Dias da Silva, at 2m54.8s at the end of the first stage of the competition. Bernhard Ten Brinke, who is in Portalegre to fight for the FIA World Cup in Bajas, occupies the third position, at 3m03.8s.

The competitors found very demanding conditions in most of the route defined by the Automóvel Club de Portugal for this first day of competition. Several participants recalled past editions that created, in part, the aura that surrounds the Baja Portalegre 500.

The first test was short. The drivers had to compete on the little more than three kilometers of SS1. There, the leader of the World Cup, Vladimir Vasiliev, was the strongest. But in the second selective sector, everything changed. The heavy and uninterrupted rain made some areas of the runway impassable. In this way, only nine teams managed to complete the sector. However, the race director chose to interrupt the competition and send the remaining competitors by liaison.

At a competitive level, De Mévius was the strongest and took the lead. Dias da Silva and Ten Brinke were second and third, respectively, and occupy the same positions in the overall classification. In the fight for the World Cup, the Dutchman has an advantage over Vladimir Vasilyev, who is seventh. In turn, Ricardo Mas, who seeks the fifth victory in Portalegre, occupies the fifth place behind Aron Domzala.

Among the main names of the Portuguese All-Terrain Championship, while Dias da Silva is second, Alexandre Ré is in tenth and Nuno Matos occupies the 12th position. João Ramos, who started with ambitions to fight for the triumph, is 15th, almost 20 minutes away from the first place, while the new national TT champion, Miguel Barbosa, withdraw at the beginning of SS2 when he was left without assisted steering at Toyota Hilux. Also Tiago Reis, who was crowned champion in Portalegre in 2019, got stuck at a river cross and the team was working for the pilot to return to the competition tomorrow.
